Recommended: optional one-time calibration

SmartPedal improves its decision making over time by learning the movement characteristics of your vehicle and the accelerator pedal. This process occurs in the background during normal vehicle operation.

If you'd like to generate better mileage sooner, you can jumpstart this process  by manually calibrating SmartPedal before your first drive with it installed.

This one-time process teaches SmartPedal the full range of motion of the accelerator pedal. If you forget this step — don’t worry. Smartpedal will learn on the job as you drive.

Here are the steps:

1. Vehicle should be on a level surface with gearshift in park and parking brake fully engaged.
   
   
2. Power up the accelerator pedal but do not start the motor. We describe how to do this in this article.
   
   
3. Wait 5 seconds and then examine the built-in LED on SmartPedal—it should be alternating red/green flashes to indicate that SmartPedal is not yet calibrated.  Briefly press accelerator pedal to floor before fully releasing it.  SmartPedal is now calibrated.

After calibration, the built-in LED light will generate a fast series of green flashes to indicate the calibration was accepted.  The LED will then display a continual "heartbeat" of two green flashes every few seconds to indicate normal, healthy operation.

If you did not see the alternating red/green flashes in Step 3 above, and instead saw the green heartbeat, then SmartPedal has already begun self-calibration.  Nevertheless, you can accelerate this process by still performing Step 3. The only visual difference is that instead of the fast series of green flashes symbolizing an accepted calibration, you will likely see a red pulse before the green heartbeat begins.
