The removal process is essentially the installation process in reverse order, with some minor variations to make the process easier and faster.
1. Release the latch that connects SmartPedal to your vehicle's accelerator pedal assembly.
To release the latch, we recommend sliding the head of a small screwdriver underneath the tip of the latch and then gently lifting upwards. Please use care to avoid damaging the latch.
Depending on the vehicle, it may be very easy or very challenging to reach this latch: some vehicles are very crowded under the dash, and others use an underdash liner to hide wires that can also obstruct access. Many underdash liners can be pushed to the side enough to allow access. Others can be released by removing a screw or two.
In the absolute worst-case scenario, the accelerator pedal may need to be removed and re-installed in order to access to SmartPedal for removal. In most cases, a 10 MM or 3/8" socket or open-end wrench will remove the two or three bolts that hold the pedal assembly in place.
If the accelerator pedal assembly is removed, please ensure that it is fully re-installed, secure, and all bolts properly torqued according to the manufacturer's specifications before attempting to operate your vehicle.
2. Release the latch that connects the pedal wire harness to SmartPedal.
This is very easy to do. Some wire harnesses use a secondary lock to secure the latch in place so that it can't accidentally dislodge. These secondary locks are typically made from a red- or grey-colored plastic. You may need to fiddle with it for a minute to release the latch for movement.
3. Re-attached the pedal wire harness directly to the pedal.
Also a very easy step. Listen for a "click" to confirm that the snap latch on the wire harnesses is properly connected to the accelerator pedal assembly.
If your vehicle's wire harness uses a secondary lock, make sure to re-engage that lock after the snap latch has mated to the pedal assembly.
4. Perform a quick test to make sure everything works.
With your parking brake fully engage and the gearshift in park, start the car and partially press the accelerator pedal to make sure you have a good connection.
If you don't hear acceleration, re-check the connection between the pedal assembly and the pedal wiring harness.
WARNING:
For your safety, if you do need to remove the accelerator pedal assembly, use the services of a trained professional. It should take only 10 minutes to remove and re-install.
